THE POTTING SHED
In the midst of the lovely Topiary Garden sits The Potting Shed, an enchanting converted barn that Charlotte and Donald now open as the perfect self-catering get-away retreat for two. With its own private gardens and a summerhouse, it’s a great place to unwind, listen to birdsong, and simply enjoy the Kent countryside. A welcome basket of flowers and home grown or local produce awaits guests who are welcome to visit the main Topiary Garden and also make friends with the rescue donkey Dolly with her two companions, the sheep!
The Potting Shed has an interesting history. It was once the potting shed of British plant collector, ornithologist and artist Captain Collingwood ‘Cherry’ Ingram, so called because of his love and dedication to the preservation of Japanese flowering cherry trees. In our potting shed here in Benenden, ‘Cherry’ Ingram grafted cuttings from Japan and around the world on to the Prunus avium species. By the early 1930s, his garden was home to more than 79 varieties of cherry, including one that was thought extinct in its native Japan – and which he resolved to reintroduce.
The Potting Shed was converted in 2012 into a comfortable one bedroom self-catered holiday let.
In this slideshow we have some images of The Potting Shed and its garden.
